It is a big YES for that you cannot add songs and pictures without iTunes. iTunes also updates your iPod automatically the good thing is that iTunes installs bug fixes and volume limit in your iPod nano. Download the latest iTunes software which is iTunes 7.1.1 to get this good things for your iPod for free. http://www.apple.com then look for iTunes. I've been using this with my iPod nano.

Yes, it's the only way to update your Ipod, and sync music. It's free and very easy to use! All music on the computer will automatically upload to the itunes/ipod, all music (from Ipod) will download to the computer. It's great!!

Yes because if you don't use it you wouldn't be able to download music into it. Comes from experience i tried it on mine a million times without itunes and never worked.

While iTunes is usually the program of choice to add media to you iPod there are many other programs available. I find most all of my software at www.softseek.com or www.filehippo.com.
