As long as there's greedy people in the world, communism will never work.

To answer those before, the USSR wasn't communist. It COULD have saved the autonomous peasant armies until the Bolsheviks raised the flag of leninism, seized power, stole real communism out from under the workers, and created state capitalism. What you consider "communism" more resembles fascism than any true socialist idea.

However, true communism is saving the Zapatistas and the Oaxacan rebels, and it would certainly help the people of Iraq.

Will it prevent civil war alone? No. The end of religious civil war in Iraq requires the abolition of religion, period, and it must span beyond just Iraq into the world itself. So long as gullible morons hold on to and build a church out of any faith, be it Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Pagan, or anything else for that matter, there are always going to be problems resulting from it.

No. Communism couldn't even save the Soviet Union. To quote Truman, it is a "false philosophy" that degrades the economic order of a country in trying to equalize everything, while at the same time establishing a political dictatorship. The system only works or appears to be working when you a have a strong man like Stalin or Khruschev who can either bully or kill his opposition. Once those strong leaders died, the Soviet Union began to decline as a result of its own system.

There also other factors that would make Communism unfavorable. Particularly that it prefers its countrymen to be atheistic. The current civil war in Iraq is a sectional war between two religious sects, both of which posses various fanatical factions. Telling both to dump religion altogether is not going to work.

Solving the problem in Iraq will involve finding something that all of Iraq's different groups can agree on that doens't conflict with their religious beliefs. Communism is not one of those things.

Even if a (probably secular) socialist government were to form in Iraq, it'd almost definitely get crushed either by the US, Saudi Arabia, or Iran. That being said, secular elements in Iraq seem to be the most worthy of support in the creation of a new, stable government. I personally like the stated aims of the Iraqi Freedom Congress, arguing for a "democratic, secular, and progressive alternative to US occupation and political Islam".

And I've always liked the idea of arming the Iraqi trade unions as a counterbalance to the sectarian militias. Not something the US would be too keen on, though.

Did it save Russia? Communism is great in theory but can never work in reality. The human race has free will and free will can not work with Communism. A Monarchy (which is what they had with Saddam) will never work either.

No. How could it? Communism has not ended or prevented any civil war that I know about.

If you consider that Sadam was an ally of the Soviets, it did help stave off civil war through much of his reign. That was via brutal opression, but, if you like brutal opression better than civil war...
