I saw a number of similar questions on Y!A but I wanted to know if this is normal and if there is a term for it or a name? I have terrible insomnia and stay up all hours of the night usually not falling asleep until 10 am the next day. I have attempted many times to stay up for 24+ hours (Up to 48) In order to try to correct this, even some very heavy sedatives. None seem to work. Regardless of how exhausted I am during th day, when it becomes dark, I wake up. Then cannot get to sleep. My Doctor and Psychiatrist are absolutely stumped. Has anyone heard of this or have a name for it?? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestion pinky, but if Valium cannot put me out, then chamomile won't either

I had my baby on the 21st of November and she is the same way. She will fall asleep around 2:00 or 3:00 pm and sleep on and off until about 9 or 10:00, only waking for feedings. Then it seems like she is up all night! She'll fall asleep around 3:00 am and then wake up at 5 or 6 and wants to be held for an hour or 2 or she'll cry. Then she'll fall asleep until about 8 or 9 and then just won't go back to bed, so I am getting pretty much no sleep! But something that really helped me was tp swaddle her tight and give her a pacifier. It also helps her to fall asleep if I turn her on her side in my arm and lightly jiggle her up and down while her head is in my palm. I think it helps her to feel like she's still in the womb. Also try putting him in a swing on the fastest setting. When you get up to feed him, have a quiet place to sit where the light is dim and do not change him every time he wakes up in the night unless it's been a while or he's had a bowel movement; it tends to wake them up more when you change them. Good luck & i hope things get better soon :) congrats

A pretty similar thing happens to me, but I don't think my case is extreme as yours is. Most people go to sleep because light actually affects the brain and when it feels that it's appropriate for you to go to sleep; it's possible that however that works isn't working or is working the opposite way. It could also be behaviorally; you could've learned to go to sleep at night and it became natural after a while. I don't know what your problem is, but try changing the time you go to bed by a little bit every night. Might not work fast, but I noticed that an abrupt change in sleeping patterns doesn't work for me.

man this is so me....I never really had a problem with this until after my hysterectomy when I was 36yrs old. it was an emergency one and it took 8hrs when it should have only taken 3-4hrs. it makes me wonder what happened during that time and could it have affected my brain. I was given premarin the harmones for after and I was allergic to it and couldn t sleep at all. my brain wouldn t allow itself to conk out. I found out I was allergic to it and it was almost killing me. well, I got off and was put on an antidepressant ..desepramine and took it for years. it caused me to fall asleep at night and stay awake during the day. I couldn t take naps with it during the day time as I would get headaches if I did. then I was told to get off. so I did and began having seizures. so now I m on keppra a seizure med. fun aint it. I was sleeping fine..then in 2011 I got really sick and noticed my sleep had changed. I was off the desepramine which is an antidepressant and helps with sleep. and maybe that is about the time I was off completely...I noticed that I could stay up hours and then after eating in the morning I would fall asleep...I do have prediabetes. its crazy. every now and then it corrects itself but not for long...im back in the not sleeping at night mode and awake and sleeping all day...it makes for a non existant life as my husband sleeps at night. I m on paxil or paroxetine right now for moods because keppra the seizure drug causes anxiety etc..mood changes...it helped a lot..but it doesn t help with sleep at all. I would rather take a tricyclic antidepressant that helps with sleep. I would be up beat and moving...the SSRI s don t help with that. its wearing me out....not helping my immune system. only bad part is it causes weight gain. once you sleep in the daytime you cant sleep more at night...that only gives one a headache. and I have played those games as well staying awake 24hrs and seeing if I could sleep the next night...yep it works for one night but that is it...praying for help...

If you are on any medications (that may be causing this), check out the possible side effects (please use a reliable site such as WebMd or something like that).
Have you tried Camohmile tea? I know it sounds simple, but it puts me right out!
good luck i hope you find some help here.
