Probably a water leak of some sort---best thing is to pull back the carpet, remove seat if necessary and remove any plastic trim panels on the side of the interior in that area, then sit in the car with a flashlight and have someone run water from a garden hose over the car in that area starting towards the bottom and working your way up. Observe if there's any water leaking in from the cowl area, around door seals, windshield,etc...there usually are whiteish tracks indicating a previous leak. and sometimes a leak may occur in another part of the car away from where it puddles. I had that same problem with my Volvo. I didn't have a clue what caused it. Eventually I got rid of it. That car cost to much for maintenance.

what colour is the liquid and what does it smell like? What year and model is the Volvo?
