In the US, we have seen this phenominon as well. In DC for example, a municipality with the STRICTEST gun laws in the country, the homicide and violent crime rate far exceeds that of any other city in the US

The socialist red diaper doper babies just want our guns. How dare we peons have any control over what happens to us. More crime means more laws which means more government control which is good for fat government types who in turn want more power, so on and so forth. Just shut up and follow the sheep ahead of you.

You are making a common mistake that many people make and ignoring a fact of statistics which has been used to screw people ever since statistics was invented. CORRELATION DOES NOT INDICATE CAUSATION!
Example of this fallacy: Studies show that 90% of the people who died last year, had eaten chocolate... therefore chocolate causes death.
It is pretty clear that chocolate did not cause the death, but the statistic shows a strong correlation. How can this be? Is the number wrong? No, of course not. It just has no relation to the deaths.
In this case, the gun control law could be the cause of the increase in crime, but there's no proof of that. Maybe the change in the gun law coincided with some economic downturn and that's causing the crime. Maybe Australia got lucky for 25 years in a row, and now the crime rate is "self-correcting"... There is a strong correlation between the change in the law and the change in the statistics, but that does not mean that one thing caused the other.
However, in anticipation of changing laws here, I went and got another gun. So, for me, there is a definite relationship, but that doesn't mean anyone else felt that way.

Any gun control law in the US will be overturned because of the 2nd amendment. I'm not saying I agree with that, but it is the truth. Until you ratify an amendment that repeals the bill of rights, you will not be legally able to limit people's right to bear arms. Any law that is not specifically granted by the federal constitution can be regulated by the states, but any law passed by the states that contradicts the constitution is unconstitutional and will be defeated de facto.
It will take an overwhelming majority to repeal the 2nd amendment, not likely to happen in our lifetime. We need to come up with a better way to control crime then fuss about gun control. I mean, really... guns don't commit crimes now do they? Passing gun control laws is a waste of time and distracts from the real reason people are committng crimes. Instead why not tougher sentances for using a gun in a crime??
Like I said earlier, tho, I don't support the right to bear arms. It is unnecessary in this day and age... and the constitution has been wrong before as in slavery and prohibition.

That's not proof, it's just evidence. There are confounding factors that could also have contributed to the modest increase in homicides and assaults (it might be increased confidence that your victim won't be armed, but it might be other things - worsening economic conditions, social unrest, etc).
The armed-robbery stat is startling. Does that include knives and cricket bats, are did criminals make a serious effort to acquire guns?

Guns stop crime, citizens are usually the first responders. We call the police for back up.
