positive is red black is negative and the cables must be attached that way to your car and the jumpers...or poof not a pretty site!
i remember by thinking negative is ugly and black reminds me of ugly
i don't know it works for me

Positive is red, negative is black. Connect the positive to the good battery first. Second, connect the positive to the dead battery. Connect the negative to the good battery. For the dead battery negative, look for an unpainted piece of metal away from the fan belt to connect to. It there is no easily accessible unpainted metal, connect to the negative post.

Red is always positive and Black will always be negative. TThe order of connection should be positive to positive and then negative to ground(unpainted metal away from the battery). Disconnecting is just the reverse order.

People use whatever color cable they have to replace battery cables all the time. If you want to be sure, trace the battery cables. The negative one will connect to the engine block.
