I'm willing to bet it is because inside everyone, we all want to be better then others, so in a weird way its like intimidation but also a lot of people do it because we want to be noticed, so that way we get our much needed attention and then we feel better about ourselves because everyone likes to be noticed, at least sub-consciously.

I believe we try to impress virtual strangers because these people know nothing about us. The dont know what we do , or our faults, so it seem to boost our self esteems up as well. So telling people our dreams and what we want to do, seems like a better and more exciting life for some. It also gets alot of virtual strangers to communicate with us at the same time .

We may be virtual strangers, but we operate in a virtual world which gives us the opportunity to become well-known. Our avatar lets people have a visual cue to our identity and our collective behavior lets people know something about us.

We are all annonymous, unfamous people. Prior to the internet, with all of the media controlled by a few, it was nearly impossible for the average person to achieve fame.

The internet is a whole new paradigm in which we are judged less by our looks and more by the content of our virtual traces. The messages we leave, the blogs we create, the Answers we give, the networks we have established are all ways in which we could achieve fame and the esteem of others. No 3 or 4 media outlets control the access, instead we all currently have fairly equal access and equal opportunity.

We put our best selves forward on the Net because we can and because we want to be appreciated by others.

When we enter into virtual space we wear the mask of the web. Communication is not necessary in many of the five sense areas which essentially make a face to face conversation. But hey if someone feels gratified by this false sense of reality that is their prerogative.

Seem? I am impressive.

Well, in a diminutive and hairy sense at least.
