It really depends on how you are talking about and what exactly is going on. Tenured professors for example can rip students pretty good in a professional disagreeing type of way. They may not be well liked for it but that's their choice in the world of academia. Now, just being hateful and out of line is a different story even for tenured people but even then nothing is really done because they just want your money.

No, and students shouldn't insult teachers, either, but both happen. Whether you do something about it or not depends on the egregiousness of the incident. Was it done as a joke, that misfired? Was it done in a mean and sarcastic manner? Did it expose the student to riducule? These all have a bearing.

Teachers should not insult or embarass their students, even if they do not like them. It is inevitable that teachers will run across students that grate on their nerves, but they are not supposed to show it. Insults and embarassment are counter-productive to the learning environment.

It would depend on the insult and the context. Quite often I jokingly make comments to my kids that could be construed as insults. The reason they aren't is because the kids know me and that I have a very dry sense of humour.

Please elaborate - tell us what, when, why and how it was said. Blanket answers are only half-truths.

I guess they can, but it is inappropriate, just as a student insulting a teacher is disrespectful. I get it all the time, and I teach first graders!

"Can" is not the correct word you need. You mean "May a teacher insult. . ."

You see, /CAN/ really means "is it possible," whereas /MAY/ means "is it permissible."

Of course a teacher CAN insult a student. But it is not permissible according to ethical standard of.behavior.

So, there you are!
