propping up the bottle increases the chance of the baby choking. Although it may seem easier that way it is not always best. I will admit when my girls were younger i found it hard still do to hold and feed both at same time. so i would lay one on couch on her side and have bottle next to her just sort of propped. but it was never right up just sort of a little. enough to help the liner contract easier. and when it was time to burp i would burp the one in my arms. then lay her down with bottle and then hold the other baby and feed.

It's not unsafe per se, though not recommended because it's safer for a parent to be there to remove the bottle when they feel the baby stop sucking to reduce choking. I feel rather insulted that you include all formula-feeding parents in your statement; my mother never breastfed any of her four children but never propped any of us up with a bottle. And sometimes running errands, cleaning the house, or doing laundry so the baby can live in a healthy environment sometimes trumps sitting and holding a baby for half-an-hour so they can drink four ounces of milk. And it's not like feeding is the only time a mother can interact with their child; changing, bathing, playing, reading, bedtime, nap-time: all of these are areas where parent/child interaction can be found. Plus, it's not like a mother props up her baby's bottle at every feeding (I'm sure some do, but not any I know). All in all, I don't think the bonding is lacking because a mother props up the baby's bottle while she runs errands in the grocery store.

I've heard that propping the bottle isn't a good idea because it can cause [or increase risk of] choking & ear infections.

However, I often find myself in the same situation with my daughter. What I do is usually sit her in her bouncer or highchair & hold the bottle for her. She can still place her hands on it & feel like she is doing it herself but I am still there controlling it pretty much & making sure the milk doesn't run all over the place [and that she doesn't choke of course].

Also is your son teething? My daughter has only started doing this since she began teething. I think she may be trying to rub her cheek against me to help with the discomfort. Might that be why he is doing this?

There is a better chance of your baby choking on the liquid in it when you prop the bottle. Also, studies have shown that babies get more ear infections when there bottles are propped. That is caused by the fluid leaking into there ears when it goes down there cheeks. The more you hold your baby the easier it will get to feed him. Be patient, he will learn.

No! Your baby could choke and when he's eating the formula will drip inside of his ears causeing him to have many ear infections. Just make him take the bottle while your holding him, yes it can be frustrating but since the risks of proping the bottle could be death, its very much worth it.

They say that babies can choke when their bottles are propped out. They also say that babies need the cuddling while feeding. If he won't let you hold him, then what you should do is sit him on the couch next to you and hold the bottle for him. Don't prop it up with blankets, etc.

Propping is not a good idea. I had some trouble getting my son to eat from a bottle...the best position we came up with is that I sit indian style, and he lays with his head on one leg, butt in the middle, and legs up on the other leg. Maybe it will work for you?!

Its fine to prop a bottle on occasion. I do it all the time ( I have twins and I prop one bottle next to me and I hold and feed the other) Just dont leave your baby unattended. Also try to hold them because of the attention factor..babies love being snuggled so try to hold and feed him as much as possible. If he is turning away from the bottle..could he be full??? How old is he?

Proping up the bottle increases their chances of choking. Be persistent w/holding it.

No, it's not a good idea to prop up a bottle. The baby could choke. I have seen it happen.

When you hold him to feed him and he is spitting the bottle out of his mouth and turning his head towards your BREAST he is probably trying to nurse! Duh!

Why not breast feed him? Poor thing!!!!
