I would drop homeopath out of the sentence entirely. You will find very few doctors or pharmocologysts that support homeopathy and even less that will go public and support it.

I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean exactly... but perhaps,

"pharmacology and homeopathy were the most prevalent disciplines" or "the main sources of healthcare"

?

You could substitute "were" with "had been".
