Jenny: it was like off and on.. the whole time.. and it was more like 3 weeks.. o_O and i didnt think much about it because i heard your period can be out of order for like two years after you start it.

Your cycle starts on the first day of your period. Your periods probably won't be regular (as in you will be able to count days and predict whether it will start on a Monday or whatever) for quite a while yet.

Until your body adjusts to the hormonal changes taking place, your periods will be irregular. This is normal, but some girls experience it more than others.

The cycle starts over again after the period ends. The average time between periods is 28 days, although this can vary from 21 to 32 days, depending on the individual. Midway in the menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs. That's the time when a woman is most likely to become pregnant, as an egg is released from the ovary. If fertilized by a male sperm, it will attach itself to the wall of the uterus and begin to grow into an embryo. If the egg is not fertilized, there is no need for the build-up of tissue and blood in the uterus, so it sheds the material, and that's why you have a period.

Just thought I'd throw all that in, in case you were wondering what the whole period thing was about. You'd be surprised how many people, even adults, don't exactly understand the physiology of menstruation.

You're okay. When you first start your period it can be very irregular. Your cycle begins on the day you start your period, normally lasts from 5 to 7 days and can be counted on coming back every 21 to 28 days.

But like I said, when you first start it can be very irregular. You may want to mention to your mother about how long your period lasted this time and keep records of your start & end dates on a personal calendar for your information in case you need to go to the doctor, because they will ask. It is a good idea for any female to keep track of her periods anyway for your own knowledge and health. Trust me, the one question that always comes up at a doctor visit once you have started is "when was your last period?". LOL :-)

Talk to your mother about your periods. She can be more of a help to you than those of us on here. We can give you advice, but she can give you support and knows what is best for you. My daughter is 12 too.

Good luck!

ps - I will leave a website for you that you can check out. It is made just for girls going through the same things you are. Hope it helps you!

2 1/2 weeks is a very long time to have your period. I think you need to possibly ask a doctor that question. Go to your primary doctor or find a OB/GYN. Talk to your mother or older sister or aunt about it and they will help you.
