Which version of Windows do you have? I'm assuming you have XP.

If you can't right click > Delete to remove the shortcuts, try this:

1. Double click "My Computer".
2. Double click "Local Disk C:\"
3. Double click "Documents and Settings"
4. Double click on your user name folder (if you don't your user name is, click on the start button and look towards the top of the bar)
5. Double click on "Desktop"
6. Right click on the shortcuts you want removed and click "Delete"

Alternative
1. Left click a shortcut
2. Press the delete key on your keyboard to remove.

Alternative #2:
1. Left click a shortcut
2. Click on "File" at the top of the Window, then click on "Delete" from the drop down

Shortcuts for items on your desktop are stored in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\\Desktop

You should be able to right-click on them there and select delete, or click once to highlight, then move upto File and move down the list to select delete.

Make sure you are running as an Administrator, that might be a quick fix, but just try it, you never know.
