Hi,
Someone is selling me his Coleman 5000 watts generator for $150. don't know much about generator but know I need one for this summer because last year we had a black out and had to deal with the hot weather.
Wonder if it's good and will it run a fan and household appliance?

it's brigg and tratton engine. the guys say it's in good condition and only need to pull it 1 or maybe twice. It has elecrtric press START but battery is dead. That shouldn't be much to buy new battery right? he is selling it because he is moving out of state and doesn't want to take it along.

The engine is very noisy. It is a side valve engine which uses a small muffler. If you have neighbors nearby you'll be getting plenty of complaints.
I've operated my house during extended outages with a 5kW generator. It powers the well pump, furnace, microwave and toaster ovens, lights and so on, although not everything at once.
Sounds like a good deal and I think I'd go for it.
Read through my generator page for more information...

Make sure it works well, and find out if all the hoses, gas lines and such are in good shape so its fuel isn't wasted. 5000 Watts should run your frig, keep your air conditioner running nicely and support most energy efficient lighting in the house.
If you have a modern HDTV or Projection TV Set get a 120 Volt back up power supply with surge protection that is strong for your television set, because when those back up generator are first started, if anything is left on by accident when the generator kicks in they surge power through the house and can fry tender little circuits.
Determine how many household appliances are running on an average day and if they are short of 4000 Watts a 5000 Watt back up generator should do fine. 10,000 Watt back up generators are best if you have a bunch of appliances running and switching on and off at different times and especially if they switch on at the same time.
It takes a 1000 Watt Generator to manage a single family refrigerator or air conditioners because most refrigerator type appliances shuttle a power surge when they start up which needs that much to give to keep the electricity from dropping too low to keep the refrigerator type appliances running smoothly.

Coleman makes good products. You need to know how the generator was maintained. The price makes me wonder. 5000 watt should easily handle a fan and a frig. You may want to ask why he is selling it.

Depends on what you mean by household appliance.
Fan and refrigerator and freezer then the answer is yes. Should not be a problem.
Air conditioner? No probably not.
I would be more concerned with the condition that the generator is in. Was it well maintained? Does it work? Does it start easily?

yes, to give you an idea of how much can you do with it, you can run:
2 computers (400w each)
1 microwave (1000w aprox)
1 blender (500w)
10 bulbs (100w each)
1 small refrigerator (500w)
2 27" Tv (250w each)
that makes 4300 Watts so you still have enough power left for some other appliances
