No, I have never heard of anyone losing their virginity because of a tampon. I used to use tampons from after 18 years old til about 5 years ago or so. I am still a virgin at age 35.
In the true and correct sense of the word "virgin" it means someone that has never had sex.
What probably happened is that your friend could have broken her hymen (the thin layer of skin that surrounds the vaginal opening). When this breaks (and it can break for a number of reasons such as a fall) it can sometimes cause bleeding.

It is quite easy to break the hymen by using a tampon, but I wouldn't consider that "losing one's virginity." There are a number of things, including vigorous exercise, which can tear or damage the hymen, and if this is considered to be the only sign of virginity, then almost no girls would actually keep this status into even their mid-teens.
I'm also a bit puzzled about this story, because a tampon's sole purpose is to absorb the menstrual flow, which is also blood, and therefore, it would be nearly impossible to determine whether the tampon broke the hymen or the blood was part of the normal menstrual flow.

if she was using a tampon, she was already bleeding in the first place. you can't lose your virginity to a tampon. You can break your hymen playing sports or from stretching that one area too much (leg stretches) She might have thought that she broke it because she had a pain when she stuck it in, but that could just mean that she put it in awkwardly and it bothered her.

The dictionary term for a virgin is "a person who has never had sexual intercourse" so in order to loose your virginity a person must have sex..
I don't think a tampon is in that category. She may have broken her hymen, which would have caused the bleeding but she did not loose her virginity

If she would read the little paper that comes with them, there is a question on there about if it is possible and it says definately not.
So no you cannot lose your virginity to a tampon and I think your friend may have been mistaken about what she thinks happened...

This depends on whether you mean physical virginity or romantic virginity.
Physically, yes, when the hymen is no longer intact, you have lost your PHYSICAL virginity.
This can happen in many ways, totally by accident.
However, for all intents and purposes, you or she is still a virgin speaking romantically.
Many women these days break their hymen in other ways, for example during sports or bicycle riding, so it is no longer an important marker with regards to proving your virginity.

i consider losing your virginity means to AN ACTUAL person! im sure she probably broke her hymen. which is a layer of tissue outside the vagina. why was she using a tampon if she wasnt on her period? this is weird but if she considers it losing her virginty when its a tampon then thats her thing. my personal opinion is when you have sex with a live human being is losing your virginty. belive tampons dont go anywhere near where a penis goes! =) thanks for the laugh!

it really depends on what you define losing your virginity as. I define losing your virginity as having sex. I mean I guess i could believe a girl who has a real tight vaginal space that a tampon....miiiight break that piece of flesh, causing her to bleed. But I wouldnt call it losing her virginity.

Its not weird, it happens. And, to clarify...it is NOT an action that signifies the loss of virginity. Breaking the Hyman happens several different ways, without loosing virginity.
