I'm a colombian filmmaker worried about the people who are going to watch my films. I found that most americans never watch films in foreign languages.

This American watches foreign films more than American films ... American cinema is trash.

Ok, first of all, I have to comment on AJs answer: I just think it's amusing that he'd say most Americans can't read and then go and misspell "unfortunately". Shows how ignorant people are when they make assumptions they can't back up.
Now to answer your question. As an American myself, I'd rather be able to watch a movie and understand it at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I've seen plenty of foreign films in my day that I've loved. However, subtitles throughout an entire movie can get pretty annoying and boring.

Well, I don't believe that it is really true. I believe that this lack of strong attendance records of Americans for foreign films is related to the distribution of the film to different movie theaters. If the film was independently produced, it won't likely receive a lot distribution to mainstream movie houses. But, do know that there is a substantial following of people (including myself) who always look forward to non-domestically made films...what kind of projects are you working on now?

I love any movie that captures me, foreign or domestic. I don't mind subtitles because I get so used to reading that I forget I am doing it. And when I remember the movie afterwards, it is like I heard it in English!
Aside from subtitles, some foreign films have themes Americans don't relate to in the same way. Same goes for American films, for foreign audiences.

anything that diverts my attention from watching the actresses and actors, i don't want to see.
i vaguely remember seeing a film years ago with Laura Antonelli (i believe) and i got very frustrated because i had to stop looking at her so i could read the subtitles.
my suggestion--and i know many will hate this. dub the film. but make sure you use competent actors and the translation is accurate.

Before the folks bashing their own culture get too carried away, I have a question for you. Are American films shown in Colombia dubbed or do they have subtitles? If they're dubbed, why do you suppose that is? Answer that and you've answered your question.

I can speak/read english and spanish. I rarely watch films (American or otherwise). It doesn't help that nobody I know watches foreign films, so there's nobody that can recommend foreign films to me.

I agree and say most Americans get bored with reading the movie. Fore me, after a while, I don't even realize I'm reading and I really get into the movie.

Unless it's THE PASSION, good luck. A lot of Americans are lazy (AKA can't read WELL due to our school systems sadly) so a movie is supposed to be relaxing and carefree. They don't want to have to read it!
