Okay, I can't believe I am even wasting my time with this one, but it's a legitimate question. My fiancee thinks we have a ghost in our rental house. It's a 1920's 6 bdrm. home which used to be inhabited by a lady and her 2 sons. The sons have grown up and the lady is now deceased (I don't know how many years ago she died). My fiancee claims that he keeps seeing a dark round shadow floating through the kitchen, hallway and bathroom area (all are interconnected). He said he was drying his hair in the bathroom the other day when he saw "her", this black rounded shadow, floating above the tub. First of all, IF there are ghosts, aren't they supposed to be whitish, not black? And aren't they only supposed to appear in the dark?
On the same note, my teenage son said that at night, he can hear a "grandma type" voice telling him to cut himself or hurt himself so that "the pain will go away". He and my fiancee both think that this is the same ghost doing this.
I DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF THIS

I guess I should have said "I don't WANT to believe in this", but now having heard my fiancee state that he saw this ghost about 5 times since we lived here, my imagination is running and I'm a little scared. What if he isn't kidding? My son is a non-cutting emo, so I think he would joke about "cutting" just to get a reaction out of me. While we were attending Bryman college last year, my friend and I recorded a voice in the ladies room telling us to "go away". The college is a known haunted building in my area, so I believe I might have something, but word got around about the recording and other students were calling us "crazy". I am not crazy and I don't wish to be labeled as such. I have the voice and it is a demon like whisper. My friend did not say it nor did I and we were alone. What is going on here? Are there ghosts among us or not? I hear so many different answers on here. <>

First you need to address the issue of your sons safety.
Hearing voices can be caused by anything from grief to more serious conditions like schizophrenia. Hearing voices that are telling you to harm your self is a sign of a possible mental health concern. Also, I would hope that as a parent you want to know what pain your son is talking about.
In regards to ghosts, most ghost appear in the day time and appear solid, misty white glowing ghost are seen more in hollywood movies than actual case reports. This is not to say that it can't or doesn't happen. The power of belief can be very powerful both in creating and destroying something. What are your fiancees beliefs about who/what this is and his beliefs in how you deal with such matters?
Also, one should always be willing to rule out the normal so an eye examination might be in order.

Okay. First of all, I am going to say it is possible to have a ghost in one's house. That doesn't mean you do, but it could be.
I am wasting my time writing an answer, since obviously if I say, it could be a ghost, you won't believe it anyway. Oh well. The problem with ghosts are, there's lots of variety (both in legends/stories and my personal experience) so it doesn't just have to be a white ghost, or any other sort of ghost-stereotype. It might just be an effect of a bad memory left behind. It might be the imagination of the two of them (but both of them? How much do you trust them?) but you might have something ghostly.
My advice? Don't deal with it. Even if you believed it could be real, you aren't equipped to handle any sort of entity with your current mindset. Tell the two of them to try and ask it to leave, but don't bother doing anything yourself.
I think if you tell them to ask it to leave, either it will or they will imagine that it does, and either way you will go on with your life, right? And you never even have to decide if it was true.
-------
I don't see the problem with people thinking you are crazy. Just don't mention this to anyone and then what is the issue? And don't forget, the concept of quantum mechanics would have been called crazy not that long ago. A few years ago, if I had started describing the idea of quantum mechanics you would have laughed.
And nobody ever saw quantum mechanics. That didn't make it unreal. Can the same go for other things that are unseen?

You pretty much answered your own question. Your boyfriend believes the house is haunted, therefore everyone (including him) believes that they are hearing or seeing abnormalities. Mass paranoia brought on by you hearing that someone had died there. First of all, if ghosts were real, the whole world would be completely FULL of ghosts. There are about 6 billion people on earth...think of all the BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of people that have died since the dawn of man. With all those ghosts running amuck and supposedly showing off to people, why is it there is still no physical evidence? People believe in ghosts because people before us believed in ghosts. Once you come to that realization, all abnormal activity will stop. Besides, if the house was built in the 20's, you can imagine all the crazy noises that house can make just due to settling.

You're right not to believe in ghosts. But people who do believe in such phenomena can get their minds into a state where their ability to observe objectively is highly impaired. I also have a theory that our dreams interfere with our real memories sometimes, especially in matters of a extraordinary/supernatural nature. Most of what contributes to a person believing they saw or heard a ghost is happening in their own minds. And they will find it very hard to discredit the distorted memory. Hysteria is a remarkable thing.

Well....I know people like to think that ghosts are, or can be good and so on, but no....no no no no no. *Anyone* who has died and gone to heaven will *never* come back. So....there are no 'good' ghosts anywhere....ever.
All ghosts are evil....period. If they don't harm you or do something seemingly good, it's a deceit on their part. Satan IS the great deceiver.
Ghosts are spirits of evil origin. I can only tell you that Jesus is the only protection. To be accosted or 'haunted' and to get rid of them, all I can say is you have to believe in Jesus, His word and what the bible tells. He is the one that can, and will protect you.
I know how bizarre this sounds and how different this seems based on what most people think they know and what is accepted, but the workings of good and evil are different than most people seem to believe.
Just beyond us is a horrendous spiritual warfare going on. In our afterlife we either go to heaven, or hell. The path to heaven is a very narrow and difficult one. Not as most people believe. The path to hell is wide and easy and being influenced by a ghost would probably only serve to help cinch that.
Get a bible, and start reading it. Get an NLT or NIV bible....maybe even a study bible. Maybe even go so far as to go to a BIBLE/Jesus-believing church. One that will allow you to bring your own bible.
I do realize this is an unpopular stand to take, but this comes from things that are in the bible. We can say and do all we want here, but when the time comes, and it will come for all of us one day, you have only one person.....Jesus who will either be on your side or not. Do what is necessary here and now and get yourself and your family free from this stuff the right way...and if you have to move, maybe that can get rid of the ghost at least, but you still have the matter of Jesus.
Good luck miss.

We lived in a haunted house years ago. My wife saw him first when she was pregnant with our daughter. Our kids saw him after our daughter was about 9 months and our son was 2 and a half. I never saw him but I felt him a couple of times. He only was active about 3 months a year. He was mean. We ran across a woman that had grown up down the street and actually lived in the house for a couple of years. After some time she told us who he was and gave us a picture of him. She wouldn't ever mention him again. You can not believe all you want but that doesn't change anything. I believed when my son who couldn't speak in complete sentences told me about the dead man that lived over there (pointing in the direction of a large cemetary 2 blocks over) that drove his dead car and kept hitting the glass. The guy had died in a car crash. He was only seen upstairs in our house. It had been divided into a rental apartment upstairs in the 30's that is where he and his family lived.

I purchased a deceased state, from an fellow who was selling his mothers home, she had lived there and had died in an nurseing home, it was a great house. My mother and father stayed their biefly and claimed he saw an old lady in the garden looking for her at but I took no notice of. One night my two year old came rushing into my room telling me that garndma was in his room. I found out that his room was her room. Then one night I was lying down and I saw an old lady who looked remarkably like the guy who sold me the house staring at me. I do believe in spirits - if the spirit is not bothering you dont worry about it. If however it is bothering you or your son who might be quite vulnerable you can ask the spirit to go to the light as this is your house.

OK, lets go part by part.
1- Do not panic.
2- Check whether your son is dating a girlfriend, and she is living in your house and you are not aware.
3- Be sure to lock the fridge during the night, and put some loose cans in your boyfriends side of the bed, so you will detect wheteher he is doing some night expeditions to the fridge.
4- Think, how can you do good business with the ghosts, may be some sort of a Joint Venture or Cooperative arrangement will do.
5- Prepare yourself for the negotiation, FOCUS, think in a WIN-WIN arrangement.

Seeing is believing, and since you don't believe in ghosts, quite frankly you can't logically have a fear of something that you don't believe in.
Ever had a chill run up your spine for no apparent reason? Ghosts feed on fear, and that is y ur BF and teen aged son keep acknowledging this Ghost and you can't.
Additional:
You are definitely not crazy, Ghosts do exist, just on a very different plain from the living, ever been by the bedside of someone who was about to die? I have, and it was very interesting, what that person had to say that is.
