My neighbors had a crew cut down a bunch of trees today in their yard. It shielded our house from theres and now there's just a large gap and it's really empty and ugly. I would like to fill it with a good looking tree, preferably an evergreen, but any will do. Any ideas?

Steve,
We need to know what USDA hardiness zone you're in, to give you a really good answer. Without knowing that, you'll get a gamut of answers from the northern tier, to the gulf coast, some will be hardy where you are, others not.

So, here's my two cents. I am in USDA hardiness zone 5, all of these will be hardy here. Consider Norway Spruce (Picea abies) or Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) both of these evergreen trees grow relatively quickly, though both can get quite big (60' +). Also consider Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis).

I hope that this helps

Austree, it can grow up to 15 feet a year. Google it. You probably don't need to buy a lot of them either as you can use the cuttings to make your own starter trees. After the first year just cut some branches off, soak in water for 2 weeks and plant.

Just a thought here .... trees that grow fast and tall will not have the root system of a slower growing tree. If you have high winds in your area the trees and their roots may be easily damaged leading to the death of the tree. I found that out the hard way.

If it's hardy in your area, Princess Tree (Paulownia Tomentosa) will grow very fast; I've heard it can grow 6-10 feet every year. It also has lovely purple flowers in the late spring. But it seeds itself voraciously, and it is an invasive non-native, so think about other options too.

a silver maple tree. they grow relatively fast and get big! if you want something that would act more like a privacy fence i would suggest some dogwood bushes to go along with that tree.
