Personal experience roll should pull from top!!! If that makes sense............... it means you use less.

I prefer forwards, so that the loose end is nearest to you. It makes it much easier to unroll. If the toilet paper isn't long enough to hang beneath the roll, having it backwards means that one must either try and reach underneath to grab the loose end, or awkwardly push upwards to rotate the roll and get a new piece. Right now I'm living with housemates that put the roll in backwards, and it drives me crazy!

the paper should hang away from the wall making it easier to pull and tear in a downwards angle
those that get it totally wrong are the ones with no toilet paper holder at all and just leave the roll on top of the toilet lid or worse the window ledge

I am an 'over the top' man, but I guess for those who like to pull from the back and the bottom of a roll it's a matter of personal preference. I can't really think of a good reason not to go forward.

right now i used to be a cleaner and we had long discussions about this, i say it should face forward because it looks tidier and is easier to pull, the caretaker said it should face backwards because it is harder to pull and therefore people don't use as much, so its all down to wether you are tight or not.

it is going to be dealing with forward in maximum cases. i think it surely relies upon on ease of use. i do no longer think of your visitors will make an argument of it. by the way, why did you ask this question maximum of cases? Are you "on a roll?".

Away from the wall. NEVER EVER MUST IT GO NEAR THE WALL. Ewwwww to everyone who puts it near the wall. Thats very very BAD. I think you know why.
