What determines wherther you are right-, left- handed or Ambidexterous? Is it possible to be the opposite of Ambidexterous eg not be 'able' to write with either hand. I know that people can learn to right with their 'wrong' hands but lets keep it simple lol.

Scientists do not know for certain what determines whether a person is predominantly left or predominately right handed.
It's which hand is your dominant hand, which is considered to be the hand that you write with. Though that is not an absolute guideline.

The theory is that one of the hemispheres of your brain is dominant over the other. If your left hemisphere is dominant, then you will be right handed. And if the right hemisphere is dominant, you will be left handed. Ambidextrous is a balance, or more balanced. Some theorise the brain may be altered while the person is still developing in the womb, and think it may be because of an injury to the brain, and so another hemisphere becomes dominant, or takes over faculties normally attributed to the opposite hemisphere. As in, the right hemisphere takes over what the left hemisphere would 'normally' do.

Some theorise that it is a matter of what hormones the foetus is exposed to in the womb.

Some think which hand is dominant is a matter of genetics. And left-handedness does tend to run in families.

Many lefties are more ambi-dextrous because they live in a world 'made' for right-handed people, and have to learn to cope with that.
There isn't an opposite of ambi-dextrous as far as I know; as in 'non-dextrous', not being able to write. I'm sure there are people who cannot write, but they will have a dominant hand, and a more dominant hemisphere. People also have a dominant eye, and dominant leg. It's the one that's most used, and the usually seen as strongest, and more capable in all of those, hand, eye, leg.

I'm completely ambidexterous. The only purpose I write with my right hand is because I used to be stored from making use of my left in college, back then it was wrong. I will write with my left hand but now not as easily. I apply every now and then, will have to whatever ever happen to my proper hand. However the whole lot else I do is done with my left hand. I can change hit, and shoot pool higher left-handed. I kick with my left foot, i am a 'goofy-foot' for people who understand how that applies. Playing complicated controler video video games, I ought to set to left handed participant. If i do not, I stroll into walls and shoot at the sky. What about Gemini in all this? I've studied astrology for many years and by way of all my lifestyles expertise, i have not ever come across a left exceeded Gemini. Most lefties i know are of the Water or Earth indicators. I am an awfully earthy individual astrologically Capricorn: sun, Moon & Mercury Virgo: Rising, Jupiter, Uranus, Pluto & Pars Fortune Scorpio: Venus, Neptune Aquarius: Mars Aires: Saturn Gemini: nothing There very well could also be a hyperlink between Gemini and ambidexterity, however it is not going to be found in the solar signal. Pleasant question

Yeah I watched the same program as Heather J. What they said was that sometimes you get identical twins that are 100% identical but sometimes identical twins can be mirror images of each other - exactly the same but on the other side, so a pair of mirror twins will have 1 person being right handed and 1 person being left handed.

They had this theory that there are really a lot more twin pregnancies than people find out as the one foetus would die before you could even tell it was a twin pregnancy, but if the left handed mirror twin survives, what you get it's the left handed person!! I mentioned this documentary to this left hand person I had just met and she told me twins run in her family!!!

Anyway, I've only met 1 ambidextrous person (that I know of) and she's in her 60's and said that when she was little she was beginning to show she was left handed but her parents and teachers would not allow her to write with her left hand so forced her to learn with her right hand, so she had to!

I'm definitely right handed - I think that was determined by the fact that I was born without a left hand. People still ask me this question all the time though. I don't think being the opposite of ambidextrous is possible. Your brain grows as you do to favour control of your limbs and this is most often right handed - don't know why it is the right. If I had been born without a right hand I'm sure I would have become left-handed.

I don't have an answer, but rather a comment. I was told to determinant hand is by what hand one uses to brush one's teeth. I write right handed, bat right handed, throw right handed, but..eat left handed (like Europeans, only naturally), play tennis left handed, cut ambidextrously. I am a mess! Oh, I brush my teeth left handedly.

I heard that it has to do with which side of your brain is dominant. If the right side of your brain is dominant, you're left-handed, and vice-versa. I guess that would mean that ambidexterous people do not have one side dominant over the other. And people who can't write probably can't do a lot of other things either.

I am a 'forced' ambidexter; I was born left handed like most of my family, but I went to a very old fashioned school where they thought sinister people were the spawn of Satan, and I was forced to learn to write with my right hand, and given a clout whenever I used my left! But I still favour my left hand for most things even now.
