Swear I am not a Bruins fan, swear:
1. Bobby Orr- if you know puck, you know why.
2. Ray Bourque- longevity, loyalty, class, talent.
3. Eddie Shore- Tough as a coffin nail with just as much ability.
If you are not in the Hall yet, I don't think you should be eligible. So Lidstrom is going to have to wait his turn.

It's tough because some defensemen are more offensive and some are more defensive. As you can see, Bobby Orr is a clear choice by anyone.
One guy not mentioned here in Doug Harvey. He was in the best in the league for about 10 straight years in the 1950's and 1960's. That sort of domination and longevity should not go unnoticed.
Failing that, Bourque and Robinson were terrific players, and Lidstrom is getting into that level with each season.

i'd haveto divide it into three sections, since there are three types of defensemen; offensive, hitters, and pure defense
offensive: bobby orr. only defensemen to lead the league in scoring... dont get much more offensive than that
hitter: scott stevens. victems include karia, lindross, and many other unlucky souls.
pure defense: i'm gonna have to go with hector "toe" blake. he wasa great player in his time, and would be amazing in today nhl
of course, there are manyother players that could probably make this list, but thes are my top three

Best defensemen ever ? Hm ... there ara few of them , but OK I'll get you my answer - number one is Bobby Orr and I belive no one needs any explanation , number two is Ray Bourque , cause of his hockey skills and his great meaning for Boston plus the story , number three is Scott Stevens , cause no team in sport history ever had a that kind captain .

Bobby Orr--he changed the way defencemen play the game.
Larry Robinson--he was darn good.
Nick Lidstrom--he is the best in the league right now. He is good at either end of the ice.
