If the school rules allow it, then it is legal. However, there should be two teachers present, not just one. I also presume you mean patting the person down - not an internal search, which would not be legal at all!
My son's school has a pat-down search (including pockets and bags) as a school rule - and it can be carried out at any time, although it is only used in extreme circumstances (but normally for finding cigarettes!) - however, it is used regularly at exam time for things like books, mobile phones and the like! (2 phones today, during SATs!)
Hope this helps!

I believe it is for the safety of the rest of the school, Someone else should also be present. ...If you have nothing to hide what is the problem?
Mind you define body search...Going through pockets is okay, any further than that is not.
Teachers do Have the law of Locus Parentis (Not sure on spelling or exact pronunciation) by law they have to ensure safety and welfare of pupils. This means that the job of parent has been handed over to them.

yes they do have the right to do it if you have given them reason to be suspicious. you are on school property and teachers/school officials are given the right to search you, your stuff and your locker as part of random searches or if they have reasonable suspicion to do so. the locker is technically school property being kindly loaned to you, so they can open it whenever they see fit. by agreeing to go to that school and you might've had to sign a sheet in the beginning of the year from the school handbook, you are consenting to all the rules laid down by the school. police officers are governed by different laws for searches, which are more strict for them.

Yes, but they need to have a valid reason (seen you steal something, seen you with a lighter etc) and another teacher/adult has to be present. They are also allowed to go through your bag/locker under the same conditions.
