It should be done every year. Raspberries only produce on old wood, so anything that is new this year will give you berries next year. Don't do anything now, or you'll jeopardize your crop. In the fall remove all the old stuff, and just leave this years canes. Mow the lawn where you want them to stop, and don't let them get out of control again. I have had the same canes, in the same area, for 8 years.

Raspberries fruit on the vines that grew LAST summer. The vines only fruit ONCE and then they die.

Remove vines that are growing where you don't want them (like in the lawn). When you are left with the plot that you want, spray the bottom six inches of the vines that grew LAST year (the ones with flowers now) with white spray paint. Then in a couple of months (after the fruit is all gone), you will know which vines to cut to the ground and remove.

Good Luck!!

Shovel time. Yep, they do spread. Problem with spraying is it is close to the raspberries so: herbicide can move back to the mother plants and kill them too and the herbicide will be applied too close to the plants you want to save risking blow over or translocation to your saved fruit and eventually into you...from eating the fruit. That's why I chase the plants around with a shovel.
