Clay is slippery when wet and rubbed between the fingers. Silt is not slippery but you cannot see grains. Sand feels gritty and particles can be seen. Loam is rock dust. Most soil is a combination of these.

Our agricultural extension will do free soil analysis and give you more information about your soil than you ever thought possible. Check with yours. Also, if you have a Master Gardener in your area, they are a wealth of information and can give you more general soil info. Check with your local university or nursery as to contact information.

Take a handful of soil and squeeze it in your hand. Does it keep its shape? Does it crumble easily? If it holds its shape, then it is likely clay. If it crumbles easily (not just break apart), then it is not.
