have you looked at pitch-back targets? Metal frame with netting attached by springs. They have a square target in the cenetr and can be set to throw the ball back or up in the air like a pop up? Depending on your age, they work well, I used one when i was a kid.

I'm not sure if your looking for a strike zone target or like a catchers mitt target. I made a catchers mitt target. I bought a pitch back system, those giant net things that will bounce the ball back when you throw it. Then cut a glove size hole right where the catchers glove would go. With this only perfect pitches were strikes, and everything else came back to me and I practiced my fielding.

Go to any sporting goods store and buy a "pitch back".Its a mesh net stretched tight in a metal frame with the strike zone marked off and it "pitches" the ball back to you so you get grounders or popups or straight catches. About 20 bucks at most places and worth 20 times that,trust me.

Cheapest way is to put a net loosely over a garbage can, lay it down and should be the same area as a strike zone. You pitch and it stops the ball.

cheap way has been suggested...Canvas Catcher has a canvas backing on a metal frame with a screenprinted batter and a strike zone size target with a bag type catching system...worked great for me, i pitched into college.

an old tire hung from a fence or tree, or a trashcan set up on a chair. to protect your fence, or whatever your backstop is, use an old rug or piece of carpeting to soften the ball's impact. better yet, use tennis balls.
