I wouldn't think so. Even wood ash is not very good for plants. Coal ash must have much more chemical residue than that, I would think.

Wood ashes will change the pH of your soil. I imagine coal would do the same, but I don't know which way acidic or alkaline. If you have already added them to your soil, you could check with your local County extension office to get the facts on the soil conditions for your area.

No. Wood ashes can be used in some circumstances but not coal.

However, I think the coal ash is gritty and may solve a slug/snail problem.
