Lots of good suggestions...BUT: how old is your computer, in terms of FireWire or USB output and does it have a CD burner (internal or external)?

The absolute quickest way is a FireWire transfer between two computers.

But if your computer does not have FireWire ports, does it have a USB port?
If so, use a flash drive...you can get one with 4GB of memory for around $40.00.

No USB port?
Does your old computer have a CD burner?
This only allows for up to 700MB of information, but its better than nothing.

I hope you have something more than a Zip drive or a floppy drive.
Otherwise, you can do transfers, but it'll take additional equipment which you'd probably be hard-pressed to find.

If you have a DVD writer, then you can write the data on DVD & transfer bulk data of 4.70 GB from that DVD. If you have more than 4.70 GB data then go for re-writable DVD. You can re-use it several time to transfer all the date.

If you are computer expert, you can connect both the computer's lan cards using ethernet cable & the whole data can be transfer in one go. In future, it would also be helpful if you always want to keep a back up data on your old computer.

Put all the files you want from you old computer in one folder. Right click and click the Share tab (WinXP) and tick "share this folder on the network" and type a share name.
Connect both computers to your router (internet modem thing) with a network cable, or link them to each other using a network cable. Then in the new computer, goto my network places and select the folder you just shared. Copy the files to "My Documents" etc.

Another option is to use a USB drive or an iPod/other mp3 player and put all you files (or however many can fit) and coneect it to the new one and take the files off. This method is slower than the first one though!

Use a flash drive (memory stick, jump drive) whatever you want to call it or you can put the information in a CDR and transfer it that way.

If you have a CD burner, burn them to disc and then "copy" them to your new computer if you are not able to put your hard drive in the new system.

I did it twice this year. (HP went south, overheating, grrr.) First time, CD. Second time, external hard drive "restore". External hard drive "restore" was much faster, but either works. We have about 6 years worth of photos so about 5G personal files...plus assorted software

Either you can burn them to a disc or use another hard drive and slave it to transfer the pics over to the other hard drive.

you can do a memory stick or cd. if you have a network in place you can do it over that. if you have a crossover ethernet cable, you can hook up both computers via that cable and do it that way too. good luck!
