I have a PC LAN using a Linksys wireless router with 3 PCs and a DSL connection. I want to add a Power Mac G5. I am not an Apple guy. My research indicates that the G5 requires an Airport Extreme card. It appears easy to acquire and install. Is it? Will the OS automatically detect the install and activate the link to the router? Or, do I need to instruct the OS and how would I do that? I have logged on to the G5 and have not found anything related to hardware or OS; where do I find this info? Should I be looking for an Apple service site in my area?

Click on the blue apple in the upper left corner of the menu bar. It will bring down a menu.

Choose "about this Mac" from the menu, which will give you the basic info, then click "more info", which will tell you everything about the hardware and software in and connected to the machine. You can see if an Airport card is present. If not they are easy to install.

Once installed, the card and router will see each other. Open the "internet connect" application to establish a connection. The only thing you will need is the network password if one has been established.

You can do everything with a Linksys WRT54G on a Mac that you can do with a PC, including administration and flashing the firmware.

The G5 might already have an airport card in it but if it doesn't, it's easy to install. If or when the airport ext. card is installed, you'll see a little striped funnel in the upper right of your screen. Click on that and you'll see whatever wireless hubs are available in your area. You can choose one or select "open Internet connect" from the same menu to set up DHCP, etc. It's really simple once the hardware's installed.
