A baby with indeterminate sex (because it posesses some qualities of each sex). Looking at the baby's genitals, you cannot determine if it is a boy or a girl.

Just as an aside, the word hermaphrodite comes from the combination of the names of Hermes and Aphrodite.

There are quite a few different kinds.

A true hemaphrodite is extremely rare and is where a human [or other sexual animal for that matter] has both types of gonad in full or in part, this means they have both ovaries and testes.

However many chimeras are possible, people with ovaries but with external genitals more like a male, and vice versa.

These conditions are usually caused by a mixup in the X and Y chromosones. Firstly, all embryo's are set to female by default, it is only a few weeks into gestation that the Y chromosone [if present] causes the production of testosterone and the formation of testes and male genitals. This is why men have nipples, we don't need them, but they are a remnant from when we used to be girls. Sometimes the mechanism doesn't work properly, and it is possible to have female genitals but be genetically XY.

Sometimes there is a missing or extra chromosone, which often has more diverse affects than one might think. Possible phenotypes [the chromosones present] are:

XO: Turners Sydrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turner_Syndrome

XYY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XYY_syndrome

XXY: Klinefelter's syndrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klinefelter%27s_syndrome

XXX: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_X_syndrome

All these a formed when the production of gametes goes awry and the wrong number of sex chromosones are present in one or both of the gametes [sperm and ovum].

Interesting, one cannot lack a X chromosone, every person has at least one of those.

It's not where the baby has both a penis and vagina, but rather that the child had either testes or ovaries and has an indistinct set of genitals. If the baby is genetically a boy, he would have a penis small enough to resemble a clitoris. A girl would have a clitoris large enough to resemble a very small penis.

Most of the time, regardless of genetic sex (XX or XY chromosomes) a child will be "assigned" female genetalia and sex.

Well, here is what i believe...first off I don't believe in original sin, I believe we will all be juged on what WE do not what our parents do. I look at things like this...Earth is like school...we are sent here to learn. God has given each of us things that we need to overcome to bring out our best potential. The main thing is...are we willing to be obedient to His will and forsake things that He asks us not to do. For some it is knowing you are attracted to someone of the same sex, but obeying what God has asked us to do and not entering into Gay relationships. For other it is having an overpowering urge to steal or lie and again, learning not to do this because God has asked us not to. For others it is having a genetic accident in the womb and being born a Hermaphadite. I do believe that we lived before we came to Earth and I do believe we got a say in what we have to deal with in this life. That does not mean every little thing is for ordained because we all have our freedom to choose and sometimes those choices affect other people...but, I do believe we agreed to some of the more major things.

it is a human child that carries both male and female characterics. usually a abnormality found in the dna of the child. even though they carry both the female characterics are stronger and usually lead to the child showing more of the female hormones which result in a erectile disfunction...in another words they may posesse a penis but be unable to use it. can be fixed with plastic surgery at a later date
