centuries are always stated one more because 0 was the first century.........get it now..........2007, the 21st century....................the 15th century, really the 1400s

century 1 = year 1 - 100
century 2 = year 101 - 200
century 3 = year 201 - 300...

To go along with the other answers you can look at it this way. Your first birthday doesn't occur until you are already 1 year old. When you celibrate your first birthday, you are really into your second year.

I turned 54 recently but am now in my 55th year.

think about it. the first century was from year zero to year one hundred. the second was from year one hundred to year two hundred, etc. i mean u wouldn't start with year one hundred because then you lose a whole century. life is harsh and confusing. deal with it :)
