I have an old car, a 1982 Holden Gemini, and it goes through so much oil! I have to put more in every month! I do not know much about cars at all, so I don't know if that is normal but I have asked other people how much they use and its never as much as mine! I am thinking maybe its because its an older car, or maybe there is more to it? I use a BP oil they suggested to me at the station. My car also leaks a bit and I always point it out to a mechanic and ask why it uses so much, but they never give me an answer! please help, I love my car!

Older cars begin to burn oil as oil leaks out of gaskets and seals. Some oil will begin leaking through valve seals and into the combustion chamber from the top of the engine. Some oil will also make it's way past worn piston rings and also enter the combustion chamber. Any oil that enters into the combustion chamber (through the valve seals or through the piston rings) usually get's burned.

1 Qt of oil a month for a car that is that old without ever having it's engine rebuilt is not bad.

The only way to stop it, is really having the engine rebuilt and have the valve seals and piston rings replaced as well as having any seals that are leaking replaced.

According to ford, gm, and suchlike "consumption of 1 qu of oil or more per 1000 miles is normal", and they are talking about new vehicles. If you have to add oil every month, your consumption is less than that otherwise, your engine would've locked up long ago. In other words, there is nothing to complain about.
