Ok to correct whoever said it, no a cocktail party does not mean dress, unless stated on the invite! I have gone to numerous cocktail parties where females are in fab outfits that are not dresses. Maybe try a great wide leg trouser, a fitted halter top, fun jewerly and tall peep toe heels.

For jewelry, no necklace with a halter, do a funky gold bangle and dangle earrings instead:

Add a funky turquoise color clutch just to add a complimentary yet funky twist:

(you wouldn't have to actually buy any of these particular items, just examples of the styles.)
For your hair do a messy low chignon, curling the pieces that stick out. A smokey eye (in a dark color that compliments your eye and makes it pop), a soft peachy cheek, and a cherry pink glossy lip. Hope this helps and have a great time!

Step one in cocktail party planning is always to create your guest record. You do not desire to target one personality sort. Variety is the tart of life. Include guests which can be interesting, cheerful, outgoing and also friendly. If you are hosting a small business cocktail party, don't forget to exclude friends. If the business is aerospace executive, your neighbor would not likely have much in common with the other guests.
Once your guest list is established, you need to develop a budget and a record. Be sure to consider everything when making a budget. You should allow for: food; wedding invitations; cocktails; bar supplies; snow; drinking glasses; decorations; any bartender; a caterer. A bartender plus a caterer are optional, needless to say. A checklist will keep you on course with your cocktail get together planning and keep an individual from forgetting something.
The next step is to distribute the invitations. You want to send these out no less than two weeks before the cocktail party. Invitations may be professionally printed, or easily made by you using a number of the popular software products accessible. Be sure to question your guests to RSVP.
The next thing in cocktail party planning is always to create your menu. Cocktail party menu planning lets you get creative with the foodstuff. Cocktail party food usually contains "finger food, " for instance hors d'oeuvres and finger foods, creating great flexibility. Decide the method that you plan to serve the foodstuff: on trays or buffet type. Plan to place tiny bowls of snacks and nuts in regards to the room so guests can easily nibble. Include foods which can be prepared a day or two beforehand. This will save an individual time and stress around the day of the get together.
Thank you...!

If it is a very formal cocktail party you'll find the men in suit jackets and the women in midlenth dresses, therefore you might feel out of place in jeans but you could be quirky and go in a tux or mens style suit in depends on your frame and if it is an elegant enough one to be pulled off. Otherwise a sleek pair of black satin trousers with heels and a pretty floral or patterned top. Wearing flowers in your hair would also be a nice touch.
If it's just your mates party and nothing too formal then go in what you feel comfortable in and just enjoy the night, wear something summery to get into the cocktail party mood.
Have fun!

Formal party at a friend's, boss's, or at a nice establishment? Gotta get a dress or some nice slacks with a fancier top. Especially if the boss is involved. Casual party at a friend's house or bar? Capri's, with a blouse somewhat nicer than t-shirt, but not a stuffy button down. Think fun and flirty. And shoes and accessories will make either outfit shine. Have fun!

Im sorry but when you say cocktail party it does mean a dress. City Triangles have the best dresses for cocktail parties. You can find some on ebay for good prices or Ross.

Nice black pants, a stylish top and heels. Jewelry and a little makeup can also help dress up this look. If you're looking to buy a new outfit for the party Bebe, Arden B and INC in Macy's are good stores to find what you need.

Try something like this..
http://www.ardenb.com/shop/detail.asp?styleid=37736385&colorid=248&cat_id=4&sub_id=0
It's a VERY forgiving fabric and will be nice and comfortable! Exactly what you need if your not accustomed to wearing dresses. Plus, it's not your basic black! :) Low maintenance fabric & it won't go out of style.. Have fun!
