Many people across the USA are planning to have a gas out on May 16th, as a show of force to the oil companies. I do wonder it it will have any effect, tho, since we will be buying gas on other days of the week, therefore, the oil companies will lose no money, and the "gas out" will have no effect. Anyone agree? disagree?

If all the people who plan to boycott would each avoid buying a few gallons every week, prices would go down. Walk, ride a bicycle, car pool, or use public transportation. Check out electric vehicles; Detroit is in bed with the gas barons, but independent manufacturers are building good battery powered stuff. I'm almost 60 and have arthritis, but I ride an electric assist bike to work whenever I can. Most families second or third car could be battery powered, and recharged with home solar panels. The technology is available now, and it the sun ever "runs out" we're all dead anyway. Wide spread gasoline conservation could work wonders for our whole planet!

well, if lots of people do it, then the oil company will lose money, cuz think about it-
every day they make millions of dollars all over the world, take one day and cut the profit in half, and they lose a lot of money!
Now, the question really is, will the one day's loss of money, hurt them very much? well...probably not, but they will see the difference, and maybe then it will affect their thinking....i wont be buying gas that day....I hope everyone does this...MAYBE IF IT WORKS WE CAN MAKE IT A WEEKLEY THING....Like every thursday, nobody can buy gas....then maybe they will get the picture, and lower the freakin' price...!

I've read about these "gas outs" and they're really not effective. What we need to be doing is buying, collectively, from companies that are not Exxon or Mobile, so that when they see that their business is not making as much money, they will lower their prices, in turn making the other, "smaller" companies be competitive & lower THEIR prices.

I thought it was the 15th.....I don't buy gas much so they have felt the effect from me getting a job a mile from my home. I think it would be more effective if we all made an effort to walk/bike more to places, especially in the US!

This is a hoax brought up every time gas goes up. But a fuel effecient vehicle or switch to E85 and that will hurt the oild companies.

well since they are asking us to do it on the 15th, I'm passing. It didn't work in the 70's, 80's. 90's 00......
For the soul below who has his facts wrong:
Waste of time
Comments: Wrong, wrong, wrong.
1. There was no nationwide "gas out" in 1997. There was one in 1999, but it didn't cause gas prices to drop 30 cents per gallon overnight. In fact, it didn't cause them to drop at all. Despite the popularity of the email campaign, the event itself attracted scant participation and was completely ineffect

We would be better off not buying gas from a single gas company for a year -- like Exxon for example. One day not buying gas won't mean a thing.

this never works, and no matter how many people are not buying gas, there's always gonna be triple that number who DO buy gas. not buying gas does not affect the price of the product... that's like saying nobody bought a Snickers yesterday so they lowered them to $.25 a bar. it's stupid!

15th. And it does work. The last one was in 1997 and it caused a loss of over 7 billion dollars. This in turn caused the price of gas to decrease by 30 cents a gal.

The date is May 15th, and no, it won't work unless we also decrease our consumption and dependency on oil forever - not just one day.
