The home teams used to wear the white jerseys at home until "3rd Jerseys" became popular.
Some home teams would want to wear the 3rd Jersey at home and it forced the visiting teams to travel with both white and dark jerseys. Then the league decided that all home would wear the dark jerseys and the visiting teams would wear white. This eliminated any confusion about which jersey the visiting team would wear.
Hope that helps! Personally, I liked seeing the home team in the white jerseys, too.

When it was announced a few years back, I would have agreed with you. But now I prefer the home team wearing the dark sweaters. Probably because I think the Redwings, Blackhawks and Leafs have the best looking uniforms.
One thing always bugged me however. Why didn't the New York Rangers ever change the text on each jersey? I would always think at home the front should read "RANGERS" and on the road the front should have had "NEW YORK".

I think it has something to do with jersey sales. The NHL might have felt switching to the dark jerseys for home games a few years ago may increase the sales of the dark jerseys. They are always looking to increase revenue in one way or another.
I like the white, or light colored, jerseys for the home teams as well.

The average team sells more dark jerseys than light jerseys. Dark is usually more fashionable, white shows stains more - especially beer and mustard if you wear it to the game. And it is a winter sport, people are less likely to wear white in February.
so that is the fans. Why the NHL. Sales. First off, switching it meant you see your teams in more variety, and leads to more sales. Second, who buys, it is the home crowd. So, best to have the home team wearing the best seller to increase those sales.
They also said in the early days of the NHL dark was home, and the switch was switching it back. But I am sure it is all about the sales.

I'm with you. It used to be that you could always count on the home teams wearing white or lighter colors in both baseball and basketball and dark colors in football (except for the weirdo Dallas Cowboys). Now you turn on a game and you can't immediately tell who the home team is! I remember a year or so ago, seeing the Miami Heat wearing their dark uniforms and I assumed it was a road game for them............. until I saw those obnoxious yellow seats they have in their arena.
I wish they would all go back to the old school on this.

that should all be changing next year with the elimination of the third jersey which is why home teams wear dark now because all the third Jersey team asked them if they could bring there whites to the arena so the home team could where the third the problem is that most of the time the teams have road trips not just one game out of town so they would trie and wear their whites on every game during that trip so they didn't have to Carrie two sets of unies with them i hope the change it back to whites at home i liked it better

Teams started wearing their 3rd jerseys at home, since they were dark, the visiting team would have to wear their home colours on the road, and teams would have to travel with both road and home jerseys. So to accommodate the teams that had 3rd jerseys, they made the dark jersey the home jersey, now teams only have to travel with their road jerseys.

In the old NHL days, the home was dark and road was light. The switched it up for some reason. Now they are going back the the tradition of the originals.

The Penguins DARK Jersey looks better. The colors are BLACK and Gold. So BLACK makes more sense. I could probably think of some other teams that are like that. Actually to me most of the Dark uniforms look better.

The Home team wears the dark jersey, and the visiting wears the lighter color uniform so we can tell them apart. the home team will always be dark. That's why they have a light and dark jersey. It's not a fashion statement. Besides the blood shows up better on the white ones!
