Not at all, underdeveloped muscles give you poor posture, or are partly responsible.

I recall on one show they had a training guru basically who instructed a guy to do back exercises to get better posture.

It makes perfect sense, if your back muscles are weak, they can't hold you up as easily, if they're strong it takes a lot less effort generally for them to hold you up.

No, this is not your imagination. Any type of physical exercise is good for you. Continuous exercise and the discipline of repeating exercises on a particular schedule will continually benefit you and your posture by strengthening different muscle groups. I taught physical education and coached sports in high school for over 30 years and proper weight training especially under the guidance of a qualified trainer will benefit you greatly. If you're doing this on your own, you may want to keep records of your improvement on a weekly or monthly basis to verify to yourself that there is improvement in certain areas. But don't ever fail to ask questions from people who may be qualified to give you suggestions to help improve your level of fitness. Don't forget cardiovascular fitness is very important. If you are able to walk, doing things like walking with good posture is extremely important, as well as heel to toe placement. In order to eventually have good posture a lot of things have to be working properly. Sitting in a chair, not slouching is very important. So you have the right idea with the weight training, just don't forget the other things to help round out your total being.

it is NOT your imagination!!! when done properly weighlifting is great for your overall health including posture.
my chiropractor has told me that i need to lift weights more to help my back because you end up building up muscles that support your spine so it is easier to straighten up.
