Good question, and while I don't know the answer, I would guess it is fairly low. I am relatively well traveled in the U.S. compared to most people I know, and I have only been to 32 states ... though within the next two years it should expand to 49 (all but Hawaii).
I agree with previous answerer that two of the reasons are money and time. The U.S. is so large ... in order to visit many states, you really have to make it a goal to do so. I am guessing the average American has been in less than ten states, many people likely less than five. Sad, I know.

It depends on how much money and free time they have. Personally, I have been to 23 different states and hoping to visit more when gas prices drop or when I have more money with which to travel.

very few I'm sure. Most people don't have the means or the time to travel like that. I've been through most of the Southern states because that's my back yard.

i live in the uk but when i am older i am going to visit all of the states and live in one of them :)
