It takes a long time and a lot of commitment to have dreads. You'll start off with twists for a few months before they actually lock up and after that they require a lot of care.

In order to take them out, the only solution isn't just to shave them off. Go to a natural hair stylist and ask if they can do it. Pretty much in a nutshell, you'll have a type of conditioner placed on your dreads for a few hours and then have them combed out....you'll lose a lot of hair because dreads are mostly dead hair. But you'll still have a lot of hair left...don't think you'll be bald. I walked out with a full pony tail past my shoulders

Hello, I am 20 and I'm also considering dreadlocks. Now I am at the age where I don't have to ask anyone's opinion on my decision but at the same time before making this decision I trying see both sides of the coin. Dreads are not as permanent as tattoo, if you don't want them any more you just don't roll them for a moth or more and then just cut them off. Regardless they are still a drastic change and with all drastic changes a certain level of thought has to be put into it. Maybe you can try what I'm doing. I am waiting until summer to do mine. I could have been done weeks ago, but I trying this method. I started by waiting a week past the original date I was suppose to get them done and i said to myself that if the interest was still there after a week I would do it. The week passed and the feeling was still there but it was at 95%. I stepped it up a notch and then i decided to wait a month. After a month i was still at 95%. Its been almost 2 months now and I'm 100% that this is what I want. What I'm doing now is braiding my hair and trying different styles that mimic the look to see it it suits me. So after this long explanation all I'm saying is take you time with this decision. If months go by and you are still interested then go back to you mom. Go online and look up some positive facts about dreads and bring them to her, let it be a discussion, not an argument. Let her understand how important it is to you. At the end of it, if she still disagrees you well have to respect her decision, because whats more important, your moms happiness or dreads? And you won't be young forever you will be able to do your own thing soon enough. I hope this was helpful and good luck. PS you might want to try wool dread i think those aren't pemanent.

If you want dreadlocks no one can stop you really because its your hair. There is no harm in trying them, and if you dont like them you can go them out and have something else done becuase hair grow back, even though it takes a bit of time.

thank goodness your parents have some common sense. dreadlocks are nasty. they are nothing more than mats of snarled hair. the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off at the base. listen to your parents. there are more attractive ways to express your individuality.

You can't 'take out' dreadlocks, they have to be cut out. It's a big commitment, I would think about different styles.
