Who do you think was our country's GREATEST president, and why? Note that I didn't ask how much you hate Bush or why Bush is the worst president ever (which he's not) but instead I am asking who you think is the GREATEST! All reasonably intelligent answers are appreciated!

George Washington

I would say FDR. He was the president who faced and successfully defeated both the greatest domestic crisis and the greatest foreign crisis of the 20th Century. When he took office, the country was near collapse from economic failure, and democracies were being successfully undermined by both fascists and communists. By his death democracy had been strengthened around the world and the US was unmatched in both military and economic strength. There are others who can be compared to him, especially Lincoln and Washington, but he would be my first choice.

FDR for multiple reasons. He faced the greatest internal problem that US had faced since the Civil War, and one that is comperable in scale in the Great Depression. His New Deal brought America out of the depths of dispair and set the nation on its feet.

He also faced the greatest single threat that ever existed to America from outside it, and he was succesful in making it a defensive war, where Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan could not effectively claim that we were the imperialists.

It has to be abe lincoln, we would not have a united states of america if not for him. I give him the nod over washington because we had so many great leaders then with washington like jefferson, ben franklin, and many others.

Ever? Washington.

In recent history? Reagan.
