Ever wonder what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zigzag?

Lightning doesn't actually have a speed. What we see when lightning occurs is a release of photons due to the STATIC charge being released. So lighning actually moves at the speed of well....light. The reason we see a 'motion' is because the photons along the bolt are being release at different times, giving an illusion of motion.

It is as fast as it is cause it zigzags. And it doesn't really zigzag. That's just a phenomenon called refraction.
