Well some one should have told you this first NEVER UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!
Always do a fresh install.
But if you want to know how good Vista is then it will really depend on what your looking for.
I love it but I also got the Ultimate. I had a few issues with drivers but was able to get those fixed quickly other then that I would have to say it is great I always wanted a MAC.

If you do a small amount of preparation first, installing an OS is very minor so I would say just try it and if you don't like it reinstall XP. I actually love a new install and do it every 5 or 6 months just for the new install feel. And all of the prep is stuff you should be doing regardless.
Prep.
1. Move off all files you created and media files from your main drive onto your backup. If you don't have a backup solution of some sort you should. Whatcha gonna do 'when' your hard drive crashes? And yes they all do at some point.
2. Copy/export customized settings and files to your backup drive, things like bookmarks, skins, themes, etc.
3. Download a copy of any programs you might not have on disc, Firefox, Winamp or programs you bought online.
4. Think about what you'll need drivers for. Audio, video network cards or other peripherals. Windows does a good job of finding drivers after installing but just in case download the latest ones from the OEM.

How good Vista is all depends on your current configureation and your computer troubleshooting ability.
If you have a computer that is faster than 1.6ghz, has at least 1gig of ram then it will run ok. Obviously it will run better on a faster machine.
Currently, Vista is still new. There are still a lot of bugs being worked out of the software so if you are not familiar with searching for and installing drivers, finding and installing software patches and updates, then I would wait another 6 months to install it.

No, Vista has a lot of flaws. Even DELL is offering their customer Windows XP back now because all of the problems with Vista.
I would wait for another year before upgrading to Vista. I purchased a laptop from DELL 6 months ago with FREE upgrade for VISTA but I haven't upgraded it yet

I bought a new machine a month ago with Vista and I quite like it. There are some things that are different and take some getting used to, but on the whole I think it has been a 'good thing'.

If you have Windows XP i wouldn't bother taking Vista out of the wrapper!
You will have XP back on within a week!
You might want to partition a space on your hard drive and load Vista on there before you wipe XP off your PC!
Its called Dual Booting!

A lot of people slag off Vista here. I bought a pc a few months ago that had Vista pre-installed and I've never had a problem with it.
Some software won't run on it - which is one of the main complaints against it - but you can check if your favourite software isn't compatible.

Don't know about the upgrade, but I'm returning my computer that has Windows Vista Home Premium on. It can't communicate with the rest of my computer - therefore I have a brand new laptop that can't do anything.

well chris, well done on buying vista, alot of users have been highly critical of the new os from microsoft but to be honest i remember this moaning when windows xp came out
dont get me wrong, windows vista has its problems but here are fewer bugs and holes in vista than there were in xp at the same time
and vista has some excellent new additions to its os,depending on the version you have got you should have the aero 3d desktop, this comprises of the 3d tilted windows feature plus windows transparency
some versions have migration utilitys and also something new called ready boost, this is were yoy can add a usb stick or key and basically depending on the size of the device, this will become virtual memory in vista,so since you can buy 4 and 8gb usb sticks the world is your oyster
theres so much in vista its impossible to tell you everything in a answer, take a look at this... http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/help/3bdc40f0-f0d3-4568-9763-31beb2f515bd1033.mspx?wt_svl=20365a&mg_id=20365b
alot of users want to install vista but still keep xp,you can do this by dual booting your p.c
basically this is done bt splitting your hard drive in two(partitioning) and installing xp first on partition 1 and then after install vista on partition 2
this is even easier if you add a second hard drive, this means you dont have to go through partitioning and also you wont lose your current xp operating system
so if you have a spare 40gb(min) hard drive, add it know and install vista on to this second drive, make sure you set the second drive as a slave drive with its jumpers
this is a much better way of installing vista as you may find some programs that currently work with xp but you will find wont work with vista(even with the compatibility program)
if you wish to install vista dual booted with xp,then during vista set up,just pick the advanced installation and then choose d drive as the target drive for vista( c drive being the target drive for xp)
then vista will simply install itself on the 2nd hard drive and when you boot up you will see a "vista boot manager" with windows vista and earlier version of windows(xp),choose the os you wish to use and press enter, its that easy
vista is a good os with some nice features, give it a go,i use vista for at least 3 hours a day, some day its going to be the only windows os avalible so we will have no choice!
i hope this helps chris
good luck mate!

I have heard on the yahoo answers grapevine that Windows Vista is not at all good and still has some software problems with it.
People are suggesting you stick with XP.
