Data from 2003 states:

Bush- 250
Bush snr- 543
Reagan- 335
Carter-79
Clinton- 152

This is across the whole of the presidential terms. So Bush has taken quite a lot considering his time.

As of Tuesday 2nd August 2005: around 319th just for Crawford- 20% of his presidency.

"Until now, probably no modern president was a more famous vacationer than Ronald Reagan, who loved spending time at his ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif. According to an Associated Press count, Reagan spent all or part of 335 days in Santa Barbara over his eight-year presidency -- a total that Bush will surpass this month in Crawford with 3 1/2 years left in his second term."

Except his father who had taken 543 days vacation, the current Baby Bush as of August 19th 2005, passed Ronald Reagan at 335 days.

Under the Federal Workforce Flexibility Act, the president has up to 26 vacation days a year to use. Not because he is President of the US, but because he is a Federal employee of Senior Executive Service status...and it doesn't matter how long he has served in the Government.

Now, as to whether or not President GWB has taken more vacation days than any former U.S. President, the answer would be MORE THAN LIKELY.

The reason being:
President GWB signed the above piece of legislation into existence, during his current term as U.S. President...and before this legislation came into being, a Federal employee with less than 3 years of service (which would include the first term of Presidency (unless this person were a current Federal employee at the time)) would receive only 13 days, per year, of vacation time.

Now, how many days he has taken off...also includes personal time, sick time...etc. in terms of legality.

So, by all rights...President Bush is in the clear with this. If you don't like it, have the legislation overturned or amended.

It does seem so. Early presidents served on an almost part time basis. However as the country grew and we became more of a player on the world scene presidents became workaholics. Most may be on vacation but work at the same time. I don't know if Bush has working vacations but every president for the last several decades has.

As a governor, he had a six hour day starting at 9AM, working out, lunching, napping during the day and ending at 5 PM. He has taken the entire month of August off every year since he became pRezident as well as many other smaller vacations. A male prostitute, Jeff Gannon was a frequent visitor to the Oval office but this was not investigated by the repug Congress.

You tell me.

In response to the Clinton crack about Monica. Clinton is a renowned workaholic. His aides tried to make him take vacation and he wouldn't. If you read the pornographic Starr report, you would see that Clinton was working while Monica was giving him the BJ and never stopped working on the country's business. He took the job seriously. She pursued him, going to his office often and following him around the White House. HE DID NOT PURSUE HER. Clinton has written a huge book and worked on many causes and campaigns since leaving the White House. If comparisons are necessary, I think we know who the more serious man is here.

I don't think anyone's mind is going to change, regardless of the answer, but here's my $0.02.

No one has really cared about this nor put any scrutiny on how much time a President takes for vacation until Bush became President. Frankly, it's kind of a petty accusation because their "work" is nothing like what you or I do for a living.

I don't , for example, expect Bush to be busy shuffling papers all day in order to earn his paycheck. I don't even really think anyone else cares, either, if the truth be known. It's a totally different kind of job, in which all that is required is for him to be reachable...no problem in this modern age. But if it suits a political agenda or allows more criticism, then by all means, care about it.

tough question, I can't really answer it without a detailed time sheet or punch card for each president, sorry i couldn't be of more help. he does seem to spend a good amount of time in Crawford though, which is odd for someone's home and office is 1500 miles away, but who am I to judge

I don't know if any president has ever actually taken a vacation day. It just doesn't seem possible.

I honestly don't know but assuming he does no business of state while on vacation, that's a good thing.
