when people are upset they want to be alone but this doesnt really make sense... why do you think people want to be alone as they have just had something happen to them?? is it a longing to sorrow in oneself?

People don't always want to share their emotions with others or they don't want to say something they'll regret so they choose to be alone so they can "cool off" and come back with a better, more clear outlook. Also, for some people, being alone is like a protective mechanism to keep others from seeing them in a vulnerable condition. No matter what, you should always respect other peoples wish to be alone if they are upset (as long as you don't think they'd hurt themselves).

I don't think it is the same for everyone. For some people, they want to be alone because they don't want anyone else to know that something was able to get to them. Or they don't want other people to see them upset either because they don't want them to be upset too in response or to feel sorry for them. I don't think anyone likes to sorrow alone but sometimes pride wont let people show others that they are upset. Another reason might simply be that the person is unsure of how to handle the situation and doesn't know how to express their emotions well.

When I recall these situations, I want to think things through. If someone was with me, they would try to console or otherwise end up distracting me from a natural process that needs to follow through. (Especially if the upsetting issue is grieving.)

Want to be alone, think about whatever the issues are and get it over with. Usually just a few hours, or a day at most and move on with life.

I want to be alone when I'm upset because I don't want to bring anyone else down, or take my anger out on them. Plus, it helps me sort through what's bothering me better; no distractions.

usually this means they havent had as much companionship or love in their lives that they feel they need. they want to be alone because they dont know how to respond to ones comfort and are too ashamed to admit this. also its easier to not change for someone cuz once that person leaves there you are alone again

When I am upset, I need a little time to sort through it all. Other people can be a distraction. Once I am a little clear, I welcome an opprtunity to bond and vent and be consoled.
