I don't think that one issue can be isolated as the root of ALL problems in America. But I would suggest that how people treat eachother and the lack of respect for fellow man is certainly a major cause. There is a callousness in the US today...a certain apathy when it comes to the well being of a person's neighbor. It is insidious, and has long reaching effects. What are children learning from this attitude? And how will they treat others as a result? The problem has been brewing for a while now, and it will reach epic proportions. America the great will become a horrible place if people don't recognize the evils of hatred and intollerance.

It's very interesting that the people who answered this question concerning the root problems in America have pointed to ignorance, intolerance, stupidity and even the lack of God in our culture. However, these examples are but symptoms to our decline and moral decay. If our citizenry took the time and effort to read the Constitution, Blackstone's Commentaries and Vatel's Law of Nations, we would as a people have the perspective that our founding fathers understood regarding the symptoms above.

"An ignorant populace, is a populace enslaved."
---George Washington

I agree, that question is loaded with some ones perception of a liberal. I am a conservative and don't belong to any party affiliate and never will I think the best person for the job is the one to vote for. There are ignorant people on all sides and that leaves the rest of us to clean up after them and out vote them at each election, we don't always get the job done but we must keep trying. P.S. Support our troops... They need us.

It is a lack of tolerance for the the differences in the people of america. Not all were born into wealth. Some have risen to wealth from nothing. Some find it hard to make it day by day. I think if we all had a chance to live in each other's shoes for a while, it may have an effect on our tolerance for others. Do kind things and "Pay it forward".

Ignorance is truly one of the largest problems in America today – but unfortunately most Americans would rather be entertained then to be informed. Turn off the TV and go for a walk and read, read, read

Although general ignorance, and hatred are top contributors to many problems in this Country,I don't believe it's the top one.The top problem seems to be the disconnect between the Government and the people. The Government seems to be doing the bidding of the elite Corporate World. The people see their Country's Standards fading, and they feel powerless to stop the slip. The widening gap between the haves and have not's seems to be the biggest problem.

we could disregard the truth that the hindrance with the economic climate began considering that of matters performed whilst Clinton was once in workplace, now not bush (i.e. the housing bubble). the Bible chiefly teaches not to are living external your manner, but that's what the hindrance is in America, now we have over one hundred trillion greenbacks in unfunded liabilities and the federal government wishes so as to add trillions to that.

Maybe so. Ignorance for sure because people hear something on the news and take it at face value, which we should be able to but Dan Rather and the New York Times have shown us we can't.

I think hatred comes from ignorance as well and if we would just educate ourselves better we could overcome it.
