I general there are groups for "Family and Relationships" and such - but what is so special about GLBT that they deserve some unique status in Yahoo Answers?

No I am not jealous of gays - I am very happy in my heterosexuality. My reason for asking this question should be obvious to reasonable people - if GLBT's want to be treated like everyone else then they should not segregate themselves and/or ask to be treated with preferential treatment.

As for the question "Who is John Galt?" - There are two noteworthy answers - He was a writer and friend of Lord Byron - or (most probable) he is the lead male character in Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged" - also noteworthy, neither of them were gay.

You may as well ask... "Why is there a gay pride day, but not a straight pride day?"

That's easy.
Straight pride day is EVERY day.
You just take it for granted.

Likewise, there is an LGBT section here because EVERY other section is for straight people.

What is special about GLBT people? If by "special" you mean "singled out for negative attention, ignorant questions, abuse and discrimination," then yes, we LGBT people are VERY "special" indeed.

We would really like to be LESS "special," and having a place where people can come and be educated by and about us will help with that.

most often minority groups come together for protection,, comraderie, and understanding,,, if the "straight" world made it less important that "glbt" people were different there would be equality, and no reason to gather together as a group... take note,,, in schools at almost every level,,, jews congregate, blacks, mexicans whatever they may be you can see them eating lunch at the same table, and hanging out together, listening to music of their culture
a) it is simply a choosing
b) it is that there is strength/protection in numbers
c) it is where they feel most accepted
d) and maybe most important they are not made to feel ostracized
as a volunteer at a glbt center we encourage all to come and join the table, yes that does include straight people and people of other persuasions, the focal point of it all is acceptance and until there is, on all levels there will be such groups... and groups like glbt teach members to accept each other for what they are,,, for example I have a problem with bull dykes, and drag queens oh and dont let me forget the drag leather crowd but I am working on acceptance of others needs, so the programs are not only on "straight" awareness but "gay" awareness as well.
And, may I add that if you think there is a void in the system,,, create your own heterosexual group,, all it takes is a real willingness and one simple step. Just be sure of your reasoning for creating one. And let that reason be for self acceptance and the acceptance of others who do not fit the mold of your ideals, not simply ideas. Here in Tucson we started our group with 4 members or people who shared a concern,, and within a brief period of time and with some good leadership we have grown to 200 volunteers (worth $6.000000. in time and energy) to 20 paid staff persons, and a yearly budget of 1.1million $, all paid for by grants and donations, from all walks of life.
love and laughter

PS,, go to one of the glbt groups and see what happens and all you can learn and then you will have some basis for starting/creating a heterosexual group of your very own. Oh yeah why did you not choose as a subject AA or ALANON, or MADD, or any miriade of groups

We're a culture of our own and we have different issues to discuss. You can request a "Heterosexual" section, but I don't see why anyone would use it. They'd be asking questions that belong in one of the already established sections. Our questions are unique to the LGBT community. I don't think heterosexuals want us going into their "Family and Relationships" section to ask questions about male on male anal sex. Or do they?

Because we don't have any questions for you. If and when we do we will demand a heterosexual section on yahoo ask so we can get some answers.

There IS a section called singles and dating. That might be as close as you get. I suggest that you make a suggestion to yahoo. Maybe they will add it.

A group specifically for straights would be very broad in its topic, too broad to focus on any issues.
