Okay to start off I know it's not good to diet while pregnant and that isn't my intent. I've already gained ALOT of weight, 43 pounds and I'm only 32 weeks pregnant. I wonder if it's safe or a way that I can possibly not gain anymore weight. I'm not trying to lose weight, i guess regulate it until the baby is born. I've actually haven't been gaining too too much lately. I put on alot of the weight right in first trimester. ( I went from constantly working out (bootcamp) to having a back injury to becoming pregnant during the back injury so i was taking it easy and not being able to do much exercising.) Any good suggestions and if it's safe?

A lot of the weight that is gained is due mostly to hormonal factors, and every woman experiences a different hormonal mix during pregnancy. Many women naturally retain water during pregnancy, and this adds to a higher number on the scale. Pre-eclampsia and toxemia can also cause a rapid weight gain. The best you can do is try to eat a low carbohydrate diet consisting of protein (fish, chicken, some red meat) and fresh fruits and vegetables. If you feel up to walking, this will also help - but women with pregnancy complications often find this difficult. Beyond taking these reasonable measures, do not worry about trying to maintain your weight - with a little diligence most of it will come off during the year after birth. Your doctor will check you for signs of eclampsia should you gain very rapidly. Good luck and have a healthy, happy baby.

My personal story: I ate LESS than I normally do during my pregnancy, as I had too much amniotic fluid that caused my uterus to crowd my stomach and intestines and greatly reduced my appetite. Still, I gained 40 pounds. On the other hand, a friend of mine ate everything in sight, constantly and only gained 20 pounds. The point is there are factors involved in your body's chemistry that you can't control.

I followed Weight Watcher for nursing mothers and maintained a heathly weight. I gained 25 lbs and had a 9 pound baby! My doctors okayed the program as long as I wasn't cutting out a food group. Remember you only need to eat 300 extra calories a day. It really isn't much when you think about it.

Stick with your normal diet (although in your case....) but give in to cravings. They ARE relevant to the needs of your baby.

Your normal diet isn't what your body needs at all. There is a (getting) big difference between the two. Start by limiting your meat and carb intake. You will feel hungry but if you eat your vegetables you will be fine.

Check with your family doctor for a dietitian that can help.
