Depends on your application. If you are using the laptop as a server, you'll probably want the dual core. The ability of multi-core processors to increase application performance depends on the use of multiple threads within applications(reference #1). So, if you just using the machine to run single threaded applications, then you want the AMD. Multithreaded applications can take advantage of both cores.
So, if you have a single threaded application running on a dual core, which is in a tight work loop, your CPU usage will only be at 50%. While this does leave the remainging core (i.e. the other 50%) available to other applications, sometimes this is not optimal. However, on a single core, a tight loop in a single threaded app will run at 100% (thus utilizing the processor optimaly).
Be careful with AMD though, because, sometimes the numbers they list are not actually processor speed. For example, a AthlonXP 1900+ runs at 1.60 GHz (reference #2).
Contrary to popular misconception, a dualcore 1.8 Gig machine only runs at 1.8Gig. It does NOT behave like a dual processor, which would in fact run at 3.6Gig

At this point Intel is making better performing CPUs for notebooks which is the Core 2 Duo. You have to get a AMD X2 5000 to compare to the lower end Intels. There is a small cost factor that the Intels cost more, in the long run though they will pay for the difference in both performance and resale.
Good luck in your choice.

They are both close together in speed--I have an AMD myself--it works great! If you still cant decide, get the one that has the highest number FSB or the most options you will be using.

The dual core one. The reason for this being;
1800 + 1800 = 3600 = 3.6ghz processor
2000 = 2.0ghz processor
