The country has been skirted by quite a few in the past few years but a direct hit has not happened since Aug 1988
Since it seems your trip is taking place during hurricane season, try and get travel insurance., especially since an active hurricane season has been predicted for this year.

I surely remember Hurricane Gilbert. I moved to Jamaica on September 2 1988 and on September 12 hurricane gilbert hit Jamaica with the eye of the storm move over the island.

They can semi predict if it will be an active hurricane season, but still can't say for sure. Jamaica is an island that tends to see a lot of action unfortunately. The further South you go in the Caribbean (more expensive though) it is still technically in the hurricane belt, however they tend to see less hurricane action due to the water temperatures. Typically they will then dissipate down to a tropical storm.

Are you already booked? If you are, definitely get Travel Insurance. There are stipulations though. For example if a Hurricane 2 days prior to departure is headed there, but then the night before it heads over to another direction and it is safe to travel, then you still have to go. Insurance won't cover it if you don't. Just make sure you have all your answers on this prior so you understand these stipulations, but trust me they can come in mighty handy in a ugly situation, hurricanes aside.

Have a Fantastic time in Jamaica! Let me know if I can be of further help.
