The dvd rewriter you bought is USB 2, your computer is using the much slower USB 1 ports. You will have to buy an add-on USB 2 pci card for around 20 dollars that will go in the pci slot in your computer and give you access to USB 2 slots on the back of your computer.

Be aware not to plug any USB 1 devices into this new card or you will loose the speed advantage it gives, use the old slots on your computer for them.

The easiest way to convert your p.c to usb 2.0 compatible is to buy a usb 2,0 pci expansion card
these simply insert into a spare pci-bus slot and after installing the nessecary drivers you will have usb 2.0 ports
a good model is the Belkin USB 2.0 5-Port PCI Card (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6750347/Trail/C%24cip%3D50277.Office%2C%2BPC%2Band%2Bphones%3EC%24cip%3D50298.PC%2Bperipherals%2Band%2Baccessories%3EC%24cip%3D50309.PC%2Bnetworking%2Baccessories%3EFC%24Brands%3DBelkin.Belkin.htm)
once you have upgraded using this card you will get up to 480mbps usb speed instead of the dissmal 12mbps on the older usb 1.0 interface
for £20 this is a excellent upgrade as most usb devices run better with usb 2.0,although they still run with usb 1.0
note:if you are using a usb hub, make sure the hub is usb 2.0 compatible,as if its only usb 1.0 then the devices you plug into the hub will only run at the lower speeds
with the faster usb card all your devices, including your dvd rewriter will work at a much improved speed
good luck mate!

make sure the USB root hub driver is correctly installed in the hardware devices applet of the control panel/system area. This will also tell you under usb devices if you have a usb 1.0 or 2.0 installed on the motherboard. if you have 1.0 installed you have to either install 2.0 if the motherboard supports it or your best off purchasing a new PC.

i think can stay using your existing usb, which is speed is 12 mbps because of using dvd writer does not need to transfer high speed data. But if you buy usb 2.0 (high speed 480 mbps) you not only can use your dvd writer, but for transfer data to your handy drive faster and the cost of usb 2.0 is less than US20

Your motherboard doesn't have USB 2.0 built-in.

Buy a USB 2.0 PCI card. They're cheap (<$20) and work beautifully.

Google for: Install PCI card

to learn how easy it is to install the card, if instructions don't come with it.
