First time buying an LCD, it's 20", viewsonic.
My concern is that when looking from different angles, the brightness changes (quite) and it's almost like I have to be at a straight angle to get a "normal" look. Is that normal for LCd's? or should I look into replacing this one with a higher end? thanks!

This is normal for an LCD.

There is a specification called 'viewing angle' which is allegedly the range of angles that you can view the screen at.

However, the definition for this is usually when you get down to a contrast ratio of 10:1 or even 5:1, so it is pretty useless actually viewing at those angles.

If you have to be in one exact spot for the screen to be O.K. then you may want to look elsewhere, if you can move your head around anywhere in front of the screen and it looks O.K. then that is how most people use their monitor.

Viewing angle differences are caused by the way that the liquid crystal works. It is set up so that it works well for light going perpendicularly through it, but when you have light coming at an angle it alters the effectiveness of the LCD material. Some LCD technologies are better for this - IPS and VA are better than TN - but none are perfect.

CRTs do not have this problem because the elements of the CRT are acting as light sources rather than the light gates of the LCD. In a CRT electrons in hit the phosphors on the screen which produce light all directions equally.

CRTs are not a projection based technology.

The viewable area of an LCD monitor should be rather high. Is there a anti-visibility film located on the LCD monitor? As for replacing it I would consider that personal option.

That's normal.

Most LCDs have a viewing angle of 90 to 180 degrees. that's because they Emit light, not Project light like old CRT's do.

Viewsonic is among the best, enjoy!!!
