I read a very scary article today about how there were, in fact, weapons of mass destruction (including nuclear material) in southern Iraq prior to the U.S. invasion. Allegedly, they were moved to Syria, thus facilitating Syria's imminent development of a nuclear weapon, along with Iran's similar ambition. Once those two countries and North Korea have perfected their nuclear devices, potentially they will plant one in New York City, as well as others in places such as London and/or Paris, Rome -- in western countries. According to the article, they will detonate the device in New York while threatening our Government with further destruction if we do not follow their directives; any attempts by the U.S. to ignore their threats, make any moves unapproved by the "Axis of Evil" will result in their exploding their bombs hidden in the European (or perhaps American) cities. Supposedly, then, the only option the United States will have at that juncture is to annihilate Iran, Syria, and North Korea immediately, utilizing nuclear weapons, obviously, one would surmise. The point here is that nuclear war on a global level would surely evoke the extinction of the human race, some members dying from the original blasts, some from radiation sickness, the rest from the effects of the "nuclear winter" produced by the lethal milieu. And, then, nothing or no one would replace us during the millions of years required for the Earth to recover. We (meaning human beings) have currently the capacity to exterminate ourselves as a species, and there are those among us who have no respect for life and have their (figurative or actual) fingers upon the nuclear button. To me, the concept is frightening, to say the least...

Very possible. We could have a cataclysmic event like another giant meteor crashing into the earth, but I think it's more likely (in the near future) that we could kill the human race by using weapons of mass destruction. Just pray that our humanity can outpace our technology.
Whatever survives, it will have to live in extreme temperatures with few food sources. Cockroaches have been around forever. I'm sure they would survive. Not a very happy thought!

I think humans will get wiped out, probably because of something we did to ourselves. If the planet is still capable of supporting life, I think cockroaches and Paris Hilton will be the survivors.

well i think it has to happen some day, what with they way its going at the moment wit the way we are treating the earth, if we go i think it will be because the earth goes too, so there wont be anything left for a new, higher species to populate. and i dont consider humans to be a better species, we are just another mammal in with the rest of them, i dont think that all this technology is really a better thing than any other animal does, its just survival, thats all its about. we seam to pride ourselves on being the better species but are we? really?

Of course humans will be wiped out entirely and the intelligent organisms that replace us will find our remains and try to figure out why we got wiped out and why we are a dead end branch in the evolutionary tree. Hopefully they will find out and learn their lesson.

I don't think it is a question of If but when if you get what i mean' when it does happen i think things will just start from the begining unless the planet is un-inhabitable in which case nowt.

i think there have been 5 (?, perhaps 6? im not too sure) mass global extinctions. I reckon its only a matter of time before there is another one. hopefully not in my lifetime though!
