-Shower/tub valve stem on cold side is stripped.
-The "universal" replacement knob lasts a few weeks (rental property).
-Only the stem comes through the tile. No access for stem removal.
-Prefer not to tear out tile or break into drywall from back.

Need a solution! This is a rental property so I need a "robust" and cheap fix.

Thanks!

Most faucets are designed to remove the stem from the knob end, not from the back.

First, remove the escutcheon (the chrome plate between the knob and the wall). This will give you access to remove the stem. Look for a setscrew on the face or the circumference. Some are unscrewed and most are difficult to remove because plumbers glue them in place with silicone. This will usually give you access to the stem removal nut.

Turn off the water and remove the stem with a deep socket wrench. A good hardware store, home centre or plumbing supply house can sell you a new stem to match if you bring it to them. It will help them if you look on the faucet for brand markings.

Is there an eschuchion (chrome cover) at the wall that stem comes thru before attaching handle? If there is you can mark around this with pencil, remove it and you can see how much tile can be chipped to allow access to nut for stem removal and replacement

I only disagree with his white half. The unaffordable Healthcare Act was marketed as to save money. It doesn't, hasn't and won't. So there is no way it is going to help the corporations. instead the corporations are dumping employees, so they don't have to participate. The unaffordable Healthcare Act is a about control and only one small step in a much larger plan. Corporations want to cut costs, which is why the company I work for has highly promoted health savings plans, which runs contrary to the Unaffordable Healthcare Act. You also have been blind to the emphasis on income inequality. If that is not about socialism, what is? BTY: I strongly support Justice Thomas, as most conservatives do.

We have had the same problem too bad my father is at work right now to ask how he did it. I do know from watching him you don't have to remove any tile--our shower wall is solid, he just removes the knob and replace the washers(around 35cents).
